About Joey
Joey Carter (he/him) is a Kansas City-based composer, performer, educator, and newly appointed adjunct professor at the University of Central Missouri (UCM). He recently earned his Masters Degree in Music, with an emphasis in conducting and composition from UCM, as well as having earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the same university.
During his time at UCM, Joey studied composition under renowned educators such as Dr. Lee Hartman, Dr. Jeff Kaiser, Dr. Travis Garrison, Julie Giroux, Katahj Copley, Kevin Day, James Mobberley, and John Frantzen. He also honed his conducting skills with Dr. Corey Seapy, Dr. Mark Bonner, Dr. Julia Baumanis, and Dr. Anthony Pursell. Since graduating, Joey has joined the Canopy Composers’ Studio and continues to study with Kincaid Rabb and Kevin Day.
Joey’s recent achievements include a graduate composition recital featuring large and small ensemble works created over the past three years. His compositions have been premiered by various ensembles across Missouri, including the University of Central Missouri, Pleasant Hill High School, Mount Vernon High School, and the Mid America Freedom Band. With Mount Vernon, he had the opportunity to conduct the premiere at Missouri Music Educator’s Association’s 2022 Conference.
In addition to composing, Joey has an extensive background in teaching and drill design. He has worked with numerous marching bands and indoor percussion groups throughout the Kansas City Metro, Central Missouri, and Southwest Missouri regions. He also served as Assistant Band Director for the Mount Vernon School District.
Joey’s drill design career has seen early success, with seven shows produced for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 school years. This number doubled with the addition of the 2024/2025 school year. His clients include Clinton (MO), Savannah (MO), Crest Ridge (MO), Maysville (MO), Odessa (MO), Iola (KS), James Lawson (TN), and Hillsboro (TN) High Schools, as well as the University of Central Missouri.
